Why We Use Essential Oils in Our Candles
When we were deciding how we wanted our candles to smell, we kept coming back to one simple question:
“What would we be proud to breathe in every day?”
That question is why we chose to work primarily with essential oils rather than anonymous “fragrance blends”. Essential oils give our candles a depth and character that fits the kind of modern luxury we care about - calm, considered, and honest.
They’re drawn from real plants, not just inspired by them. They evolve gently as the candle burns. And, when used within recognised safety guidelines, they offer a more natural, nuanced way to perfume a room.
That doesn’t mean all fragrance oils are “bad”, or that synthetics have no place at all. But the way they’re described can be confusing – and sometimes deliberately vague.
So on this page we’d like to explain:
- what essential oils actually are,
- how they differ from fragrance oils,
- the benefits and limitations of each,
- the marketing language that can be misleading,
- and the qualifications and standards that genuinely matter.
Our aim is simple: whether you buy from us or not, we want you to feel more confident about what you're lighting in your home.
What Are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds extracted from plants, usually by steam distillation or cold pressing.
They are:
- derived directly from botanical sources,
- complex, multi-layered and naturally nuanced,
- often more expensive than synthetics,
- subject to stricter regulatory frameworks,
- known for aromatherapeutic qualities,
- biodegradable and fully plant-based.
Quality varies depending on plant origin, distillation method, storage and, a major industry issue, whether the oil has been adulterated or diluted.
When essential oils are pure and sourced responsibly, they offer a natural richness and depth that synthetics cannot fully replicate.
What Are Fragrance Oils?
Fragrance oils (sometimes listed as “parfum”, “aroma compounds” or “fragrance blends”) are lab-created aromatic formulas.
They may be:
- 100% synthetic,
- a mixture of essential oils and synthetics,
- or nature-identical molecules – lab-made but chemically identical to compounds found in plants.
High-quality fragrance oils can smell wonderful and perform consistently. But they are not natural, and many brands blur this line intentionally.
Marketing Tricks Used to Hide Inferior Fragrances
Here are some of the more common tricks used to make cheap or synthetic fragrances sound premium:
1. “Made with essential oils”
A popular phrase that can mean the fragrance contains a tiny trace of essential oil blended into a mostly synthetic base. There is no minimum percentage required to make this claim.
2. “Natural-inspired fragrance”
A phrase that sounds botanical but means very little. It usually indicates a fully synthetic fragrance designed to mimic nature.
3. “Botanical blend”
Frequently used for synthetic fragrances that evoke botanicals without containing meaningful amounts of natural plant oils.
4. “Premium fragrance blend”
Used by brands that don’t wish to declare that their fragrance oil is synthetic. “Premium” is positioning, not composition.
5. “Mineral-based” or “proprietary blend”
Marketing euphemisms that avoid saying “synthetic fragrance”. They tell you nothing about what’s actually in the oil.
6. “Aromatherapy candle” (made entirely with fragrance oils)
Aromatherapy relies on essential oils. But “aromatherapy” is not a protected term, so it’s often used even when synthetic fragrance oils are doing all the work.
The Benefits of Essential Oils (The Bits Our Customers Actually Care About)
1. Natural Complexity
Essential oils contain dozens – sometimes hundreds – of natural aroma compounds. This creates depth, movement and a fragrance that evolves as it burns.
2. Cleaner Profile
Essential oils come from plants. No petroleum derivatives. No lab-built aromachemicals. Naturally biodegradable.
3. Aromatherapeutic Effects
Lavender calms. Eucalyptus clears. Sweet orange lifts the mood. These effects are documented, not invented for marketing.
4. A Better Fit for True Luxury
Luxury is meant to be about craftsmanship, rarity and care. High-quality essential oils reflect this: they require more work, cost more to source and vary naturally from batch to batch.
Fragrance Oils: The Benefits in Context
Being fair, fragrance oils do have strengths:
- excellent consistency from batch to batch,
- wider scent variety,
- strong cold throw,
- greater stability at high temperatures,
- and they are far cheaper (hence huge profit margins).
A candle made with fragrance oils isn’t automatically “poor quality”. What matters is whether the brand admits it openly instead of using romantic language to obscure its ingredients.
Qualifications & Standards That Actually Mean Something
If you want to judge whether a brand is being genuine about its fragrance materials, look for these:
1. IFRA Compliance (International Fragrance Association)
IFRA sets safety standards for both essential oils and fragrance oils. Look for references to:
- IFRA categories (Category 12 for candles),
- allergen declarations,
- maximum safe usage rates.
2. MSDS / SDS (Material Safety Data Sheets)
Safety Data Sheets provide transparency on hazards, allergens and safe handling. Brands confident in their ingredients make SDS documentation available.
3. GC–MS Testing (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry)
GC–MS testing detects adulteration in essential oils. High-quality suppliers often provide GC–MS reports. If a brand claims “pure essential oils” without any supporting documentation, caution is sensible.
4. Natural & Organic Certifications
For products claiming to be natural or organic, certifications like Soil Association or COSMOS offer reassurance. They set strict criteria for what can – and cannot – be included.
Where We At Vessel & Essence Stands
We believe true luxury comes from honesty, not mystique. That’s why:
- we use vegan rapeseed and coconut wax as our base,
- we source IFRA-compliant essential oils from reputable suppliers,
- we never hide synthetic fragrance oils behind vague language,
- we keep fragrance loads as high as safely possible within regulations,
- we prioritise real plant extracts and carefully selected blends,
- and we are always upfront about what’s in our candles.
Whether you’re lighting a candle to relax, set a tone, or refresh a space, you deserve to know exactly what you’re breathing in.
That’s our approach to fragrance: clear, honest, and worthy of the vessel it lives in.
