At Vessel & Essence, every design choice is intentional. From our refillable vessels to our rapeseed and coconut wax blend, discover how we engineer candles that burn cleanly, protect essential oils and deliver beautifully balanced fragrance from first burn to last.
The Vessel & Essence Candle Philosophy: Why Our Candles Are Crafted the Way They Are
At Vessel & Essence, we take a thoughtful, engineering-led approach to candle making. Every detail — from the vessel width to the wax blend to the wick — is designed to create a candle that burns beautifully, honours essential oils, and fills your home with a natural, balanced fragrance.
In this article, we’ll explain the thinking behind our design choices and why our candles consistently perform from the first burn to the last.
1. Why Vessel Width Matters More Than Candle Height
Many people assume that bigger candles throw scent better. In reality, the most important factor for fragrance performance is the diameter of the candle, not the height.
Our chosen width — between 75mm to 80mm — sits in the sweet spot for:
- a generous, even melt pool
- steady, controlled heat
- consistent fragrance release
- clean burning with essential oils
A wider melt pool releases more scent; too small, and the candle struggles. Too wide, and the melt pool overheats — damaging essential oils.
This is why we design around width first, then select the wick and wax pairing to match it perfectly.
2. Hot Throw vs Cold Throw: What You Really Experience
Understanding how fragrance behaves helps explain our design choices.
Cold Throw
Cold throw is the gentle aroma released from an unlit candle. Our rapeseed & coconut wax blend binds essential oils beautifully, giving a soft, welcoming scent even before the first burn.
Hot Throw
Hot throw is the fragrance released while the candle is burning. It depends on:
- melt-pool width
- melt-pool temperature
- flame stability
- how essential oils evaporate
By controlling vessel size, wick behaviour and heat levels, we create a candle that warms essential oils gently — releasing fragrance evenly without burning off delicate top notes.
3. Why Essential Oils Demand a Thoughtful Design
Essential oils are natural, nuanced and sensitive to heat. They behave very differently to synthetic fragrance oils.
They require:
- consistent melt-pool temperatures
- even heat distribution
- a balanced wick that doesn’t overheat
- a vessel that supports a controlled burn
Our 75mm vessel allows all of this. It ensures the candle warms gradually, protecting the essential oils and preserving their layered aromatic profile.
4. Consistency From the First Hour to the Last
A well-designed candle shouldn’t peak early and fade later on.
By engineering the wick, wax and vessel as a complete system, we aim to ensure:
- the melt pool behaves the same at every stage
- essential oils release at a controlled rate
- the scent remains even throughout the burn
- there’s no harshness, overheating or sudden fragrance drop
This is why Vessel & Essence candles feel balanced, gentle and consistent — never overpowering, never flat.
5. A Candle Crafted With Intention
Our goal is simple: candles that look beautiful, but more importantly behave beautifully.
Every choice — from rapeseed & coconut wax to vessel width to wick design — is made to create a candle that burns cleanly, throws fragrance naturally, and respects the essential oils inside.
Elegant in form. Thoughtful in function. That’s the Vessel & Essence philosophy.
